ABILITY SELECTION AND REDIRECTION UI PROCESS
CONCEPTING
Because our game had 3 players sharing 1 screen, I needed to make the ability selection menu condensed and central on the active player. I concepted multiple versions that utilized different control schemes for a standard controller, as well as ways to display different direction options on the ability wheel.
HIGH FIDELITY
As a team, we chose to pursue the wheel option as it allowed for more flexibility with the number of options and felt the most intuitive to use. We decided to add a separate menu for selecting a direction as to not overload the player with information and focus their attention on the most important information.
ITERATION
After testing, we wanted to streamline the information and process. I combined the directions information with the ability wheel and opted for a system where the game “chose” the direction the players uses based on their aiming. I also made the spell name central in the wheel based on the currently selected ability.
